"Moving the Forum" (AT) is a participatory project at the interface between contemporary dance and the visual arts: dance artists/choreographers will work for one month with a group of participants to explore the Humboldt Forum, its content and exhibition objects, as well as related topics (e.g. history of the site, decolonization, provenance of objects, cooperation with societies of origin, restitution, global challenges and questions of the future) through the body. Three preparatory LABs, exploring methodologies and content, will prepare the teams for the process and promote exchange among the artists working on the project.
For this project we are looking for Berlin-based choreographers and choreographic assistants who would like to shape this six-month process with us.

Who we are looking for:
10 - 12 teams consisting of 3 people each (1 choreographer, 2 choreographic assistants)
We are looking for 10 - 12 artists and 20 - 24 choreographic assistants who will develop interventions / choreographies / formats co-creatively with a group of non-professional participants, investigating the the Humboldt Forum, its architecture, programme and collections. It is possible to apply as a team of three, or to apply for the respective role alone.
Prerequisites:
- interest in research into the role of the body as an exhibition object
- team player
- enthusiasm for working with different communities, experience in and/or interest in community dance projects
- good communication skills in various situations and settings
- leadership qualities, independent and reliable
- ability to focus both on the process and delivering outcomes to deadlines

What we offer:

We have divided the three-person team into one choreographer and two assistants, but are open to other models and equal distribution of tasks and fees. We welcome artistic teams that combine artistic disciplines. We would like to represent a wide range of experience and positions in the project and therefore explicitly welcome applications from people with marginalised perspectives.

More / Our approach and philosophy - who are we looking for?
We - Jana Lüthje and Jo Parkes/Mobile Dance - together with the Humboldt Forum invite dance professionals living and working in Berlin to create with us a large participative event at the Humboldt Forum (from February 2021 to June 2021). Moving the Forum (AT) offers around 40 dance artists/choreographers and about 150 participants the opportunity to work at the Humboldt Forum for 5 months. This is a paid work, framed and supported by a number of expert contributions and networks. Moving the Forum (AT) invites teams of professional dance professionals to work with community groups to create interventions/performances/formats that explore the architecture, history, programming and content of the Humboldt Forum through the body. The project culminates in a community dance weekend in early June 2021.

What do the Humboldt Forum and its collections mean for Berlin and Berliners in 2021? The Forum team would like to enter into a dialogue with Berliners, in the knowledge that both the partial reconstruction of the Berlin Palace and the collections, partly originating from colonial contexts, are controversially discussed. We invite reflective, critical and dialogical approaches that question and challenge as much as they explore and discover.
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for artists who will investigate the Humboldt Forum and its collection in a variety of ways. Together we would like to enter into an experience where both the quality of your artistic processes and its outcomes are important. We will explore the role of the body as an exhibition object. The project is not about shifting existing works or practices into an exhibition context, but rather about developing a practice with the museum's staff, spaces and collections.
We are looking for people who can work well with a large team and are excited by the prospect of working with diverse communities- especially people who bring perspectives from outside our "dance bubble". You should be able to explore your work together with others, give and receive feedback and be part of a group. In our opinion, this role requires someone who is able to convey a convincing artistic idea and vision and yet also to start from the ideas of the participants, including both positions to explore where they meet. Maybe you already have experience in participatory / community dance or even a group you work with regularly who might like to join the project. Or you have no experience but are interested in working in this field.
The co-creative process will be challenging, so you should have good communication skills. You will need to be able to communicate with different people on many levels: from talking to the curators about your decisions to answering the questions of a child visiting the museum and witnessing your process. We will often be working in the public space of the museum, so you should also be interested in how a creative process transforms bodies into "exhibition objects" and be open to contributions, challenges and exchanges with the museum visitors. You will develop relationships with other professionals with whom you will work in partnership: teachers, social workers, support staff, etc.
You will need to have strong leadership skills, be willing to jump into a team and know when is the moment to drive a process forwards – as well as when the moment comes to pull back and leave room for others. You should be able to motivate people and turn the artistic process with its repetitions and the (sometimes) long search for solutions into "fun" for the participants - or at least make it understandable and manageable - when everyone is exhausted and really wants to go home. You should be able to put the needs of the participants before your own if necessary, and understand that a respectful and supportive process for people who volunteer their time is central to the work.
You should be independent and reliable and be able to produce in a specified time frame. Each team work will work with its group in a different way, hence the organisation is delegated to the team. This means filling in forms, asking others to fill in forms and making sure that everyone in your team knows what administrative tasks they need to perform.
For example, a typical working day may include several of the following tasks:
- observing the paths of security personnel and converting them into a movement score
- improvising in reaction to / in connection with an object
- leading a warm-up for visitors to the exhibition
- contributing to a production meeting to plan the event
- calling ten participants to make sure they have the correct address and arrive the following day, and remind them to bring their signed form
- presenting the ideas developed at a lunchtime event / lunch meeting
- mopping the floor to be able to work well
If you need a very quiet working environment with few interruptions, or if you are more singular in your creative process, Moving the Forum (AT) is probably not the right opportunity for you.

What can we offer?
We offer a supportive, yet challenging, working environment and space to develop new work(s). The artistic team will be prepared for the task in a series of LABs (participation will be paid), where they will receive input from experts on key issues such as decolonization and restitution of exhibition objects, examples of dance projects in museums and approaches to co-creation/co-creativity with different communities.
We offer a one-month residency for three groups in parallel at the Humboldt Forum. 10 - 12 teams consisting of three professional dancers work together with one group of non-professional performers each. The team can also perform together with the group. The community groups will vary in size and may include many or fewer participants. We will negotiate this individually with the artists.
Each team develops an intervention/performance/format for the community dance weekend, which can be repeated several times over the weekend. There is a small production budget for this. All teams and participants will also contribute to a joint kick-off and a finale under the artistic direction of Jo Parkes.

Es ist möglich sich als Dreierteam zu bewerben, oder sich für die jeweilige Rolle alleine zu bewerben.

Was bedeuten das Humboldt Forum und die in ihm präsentierten Sammlungen für Berlin und die Berliner im Jahr 2021? Das Team des Forums möchte in Dialog mit den Berliner*innen treten, in dem Bewusstsein, dass sowohl die Teilrekonstruktion des Berliner Schlosses sowie die ethnologischen Sammlungen, teilweise aus kolonialen Kontexten stammend, kontrovers diskutiert werden. Wir laden zu reflektierenden, kritischen und dialogischen Ansätzen ein, die genauso hinterfragen und herausfordern wie sie erforschen und entdecken.
Wen suchen wir?
Wir suchen Künstler*innen, die sich mit dem Museum und seiner Sammlung auf vielfältige Art und Weise auseinandersetzen. Gemeinsam möchten wir eine außergewöhnliche Erfahrung eingehen, bei der die Qualität Eurer künstlerischen Prozesse und Ergebnissewichtig ist. Wir erforschen die Rolle des Körpers als Ausstellungsobjekt. In dem Projekt geht es nicht darum, bestehende Arbeiten oder Praktiken in einen Ausstellungskontext zu verlagern, sondern vielmehr darum, eine Praxis mit den Mitarbeiter*innen, den Räumen und Sammlungen des Museums zu entwickeln.
Wir suchen Menschen, die gut mit einem großen Team zusammen arbeiten können und von der Aussicht begeistert sind, gemeinsam mit diversen Communities zu gestalten– vor allem mit Menschen, die Perspektiven von außerhalb unserer „Tanz-Bubble“ einbringen. Du solltest darin aufgehen, Deine Arbeit gemeinsam mit anderen zu erforschen, Feedback zu geben wie zu erhalten und Teil einer Gruppe zu sein. Unserer Einschätzung nach erfordert diese Rolle jemanden, der/die in der Lage ist, eine überzeugende Idee und Vision zu vermitteln und gleichermaßen von den Ideen der Teilnehmer*innen auszugehen. Beide Positionen einbeziehend, um zu erforschen, wo sie sich treffen. Vielleicht hast Du bereits Erfahrung im partizipativen / Community Dance oder sogar eine Gruppe, mit der Du regelmäßig zusammenarbeitest, die Interesse an dem Projekt haben könnte. Oder Du hast noch keine Erfahrung, aber großes Interesse, in diesem Bereich tätig zu sein.
Der ko-kreative Prozess wird herausfordernd sein, daher solltest Du gute Kommunikationsfähigkeit besitzen. Du musst in der Lage sein, auf vielen Ebenen mit unterschiedlichen Menschen zu kommunizieren, beispielsweise vom Dialog mit den Kurator*innen über Deine Entscheidungen zu der Beantwortung der Fragen eines Kindes zu switchen, das das Museum besucht und Zeuge Eures Prozesses wird. Wir werden oft im öffentlichen Raum des Museums arbeiten, daher solltet Ihr Euch auch dafür interessieren, wie ein kreativer Prozess Körper in „Ausstellungsobjekte“ verwandelt, und offen für Beiträge, Herausforderungen und den Austausch mit den Besucher*innen des Museums sein. Du wirst Beziehungen zu anderen Fachleuten aufbauen, mit denen Du partnerschaftlich zusammenarbeitest: Lehrer*innen, Sozialarbeiter*innen, Hilfskräfte usw.
Du verfügst über ausgeprägte Führungsqualitäten: bist bereit, in ein Team hineinzuspringen und weißt, wann Du einen Prozess vorantreiben solltest und wann Du Platz für andere schaffen musst. Du solltest in der Lage sein, Menschen zu motivieren und den künstlerischen Prozess mit seinen Wiederholungen und die (manchmal) lange Suche nach Lösungen in „Spaß“ für die Teilnehmenden zu verwandeln – oder zumindest als verständlich und überschaubar rüberbringen –, wenn alle erschöpft sind und nun wirklich nach Hause wollen. Du solltest in der Lage sein, die Bedürfnisse der Teilnehmer*innen bei Bedarf vor Deine eigenen zu stellen und verstehen, dass ein respektvoller und unterstützender Prozess für Menschen, die freiwillig ihre Zeit einbringen, im Mittelpunkt der Arbeit steht.
Du solltest eigenständig und zuverlässig und in der Lage sein, in einem bestimmten Zeitrahmen zu produzieren. Jedes Team arbeitet auf unterschiedliche Weise mit seiner Gruppe, so dass deren Organisation dem Team übertragen wird. Dies bedeutet Formulare auszufüllen, andere zum Ausfüllen von Formularen aufzufordern und sicherzustellen, dass jede/r in ihrem Team weiß, welche administrativen Aufgaben er/sie durchführen muss.
Ein typischer Arbeitstag kann z.B. beinhalten:
- die Wege des Sicherheitspersonals zu beobachten und in einen Bewegungsscore umzusetzen
- improvisieren als Reaktion auf / in Verbindung mit einen/m Gegenstand
- ein Warm-up für die Besucher*innen des Museums anleiten
- zu einem Produktionstreffen zur Planung der Veranstaltung beitragen
- zehn Teilnehmer*innen anzurufen, um sicherzustellen, dass sie die richtige Adresse haben und am Folgetag kommen, und sie daran zu erinnern, ihr unterschriebenes Formular mitzubringen
- die erarbeiteten Ideen bei einer Mittagsveranstaltung / Lunch-Veranstaltung präsentieren
- den Boden wischen, um gut arbeiten zu können
Solltest Du ein sehr ruhiges Arbeitsumfeld mit wenigen Unterbrechungen benötigen oder eher singulär in Deinem kreativen Prozess sein, ist Moving the Forum (AT) wahrscheinlich eher unpassend als Arbeit für Dich.

Wir bieten ein unterstützendes und dennoch herausforderndes Arbeitsumfeld und Raum, um neue Arbeit(en) zu entwickeln. Das künstlerische Team wird in einer Reihe von LABs inhaltlich-methodisch auf die Aufgabe vorbereitet (die Teilnahme daran wird entlohnt), in denen sie Input von Expert*innen über Schlüsselthemen wie Dekolonialisierung und Restitution/Rückgabe von Ausstellungsobjekten, Beispiele von Tanzprojekten in Museen und Ansätze zur Co-Kreation/Ko-Kreativität mit verschiedenen Communities erhalten.
Wir bieten eine einmonatige Residenz für jeweils drei Gruppen parallel im Humboldt Forum. 10 - 12 Teams bestehend aus drei professionell Tanzschaffenden arbeiten mit jeweils einer Gruppe nicht-professioneller Darsteller*innen zusammen. Das Team kann auch mit der Gruppe gemeinsam auftreten. Die Community-Gruppen werden in der Größe variieren und manche viele, manche weniger Teilnehmer*innen umfassen. Dies verhandeln wir individuell mit den Künstler*innen.
Jedes Team erarbeitet eine Intervention/Performance/ein Format für das Community Dance-Wochenende, die über das Wochenende mehrfach wiederholt werden kann. Dafür gibt es ein kleines Produktionsbudget.
Alle Teams und Teilnehmer *innen tragen darüberhinaus zu einem gemeinsamen Auftakt und einem Finale unter der künstlerischen Leitung von Jo Parkes bei.
